Rare books

Bukowskis has the pleasure of inviting you to the spring book sale, which includes rare tomes such as Schedel’s Liber Chronicarum (1493) and other important books, among them the first complete Swedish Bible (1540-41), the rare and controversial liturgy of King Johan III (”The Red Book”, 1576), early editions of Olaus and Johannes Magnus, and classical illustrated works by Erik Dahlbergh (Suecia antiqua et hodierna), Samuel von Pufendorf (the German edition of the history of Karl X Gustav, 1697, with engraved 4.5-meter Stockholm view), Olof Rudbeck (Atlantica), Johannes Schefferus (Histoire de la Laponie, 1678), Carl von Linné (Hortus Cliffortianus, 1737), and J. W. Palmstruch (a beautiful copy of Svensk botanik (Swedish botany), complete with all 11 volumes and as such very rare).

Several of the books are found in attractive and interesting bindings, including a tortoise-shell binding on a 1716 hymnal, a Betbüchlein (Heinrichstadt 1580) in a strictly contemporary binding with the first owner’s name stamped and dated 1580 on front cover. It was previously owned by legendary collectors Chr. Hammer and Thore Virgin, who both illustrated the binding on a plate in their catalogues. Finally, we are proud to be able to offer one of very few genuine Swedish velvet bindings from the 16th century (Confessio fidei 1593-4).

Please take some time to browse the catalogue, and welcome to bid at the auction.
