Vladimir Makovsky (1846-1920), a brilliant genre painter, one of the leaders of the Peredvizhniki – the Russian Itinerants Art Group, reached his heights in the 1880s and to a great extend defined the development of the Russian genre art of this period. Vladimir Makovsky worked industriously and productively, and created an “encyclopedia of a life in Russia” by depicting various strata of Russian contemporary reality. Vladimir Makovsky painted several folk scenes, demonstrating the national peculiarities of different regions: local traditions and rites, folk dress, landscapes, and colourful characters. In the late 1880s, Makovsky spent much time in Orel Province, south of Moscow, in Selische village at the estate of the Maslovs, his good friends. The picturesque scene of the local wedding feast was among the customs that attracted the artist’s attention. Several versions of the painting “Tollgate for the Wedding Train” were made by Makovsky in 1888: the carriages with festively clad peasants are the wedding train, a cavalcade detained suddenly by an unexpected hedge, a barrier of logs across the road. There are men at this “tollgate” demanding their ransom for the pass. You can almost hear them laughing and joking, and see the precise actual reactions of all the characters.
A version of this painting, quite different in details, is stored in the National Gallery in Prague. The artist used to make copies of paintings which were favoured by the public, sometimes but not always rendering variations to the image. A version with exact correspondence with the painting presented for auction was exhibited under number 32 at the 16th Itinerant Exhibition of 1888 in Saint Petersburg and printed in the exhibition catalogue (Illustrated Catalogue of the 16th Itinerant Exhibition, St. Petersburg, 1888). However, the painting presented there had different measures. The present painting could be a precise reproduction by the artist of his favourite subject, unless the catalogue contained an error in size measurements. After the exhibition the painting was reproduced in print several times, e.g. in The Zhivopisnoye Obozrenie (Fine Arts Review, 1888, No. 25, page 395), where the picture was cut off a bit from the sides and from the bottom, and in The Hudozhnik (The Artist, 1891, No. 5, page 309). The painting is very lively. It expresses good-hearted humour and attention to the local way of life. It is deliciously colourful and convincing in presenting the human nature. This is an excellent insight in the creative thought and artistic style of Vladimir Makovsky, a great genre painter.
