Väinö Hämäläinen first met his future wife Helmi Mäkinen (1878-1965) when he was visiting his fellow student, Helmi's brother, in Myllykylä. Helmi's sister Maija later married the artist Pekka Halonen and the brothers-in-law got along very well.
