Arttu Brummer was a renowned teacher at the Finnish School of Art and Design who trained and inspired a whole generation of successful post-war designers. Sarpaneva, one of his students, worked as Brummer's assistant during his studies and spoke of his teacher with gratitude and respect. He described Brummer as a passionate and inspiring messenger of free expression, a great personality, and a Renaissance man in every sense of the word.
Brummer's allowance of creative freedom was crucial to Sarpaneva's artistic and personal growth. Sarpaneva created the glass sculpture 'Hommage a Arttu Brummer' as a tribute to his teacher. Although Sarpaneva did not explain the sculpture's appearance, it conveys dignity, integrity, and peacefulness to the viewer. It represents the powerful and ennobling energy that Brummer possessed, which made his students successful.
