John Bauer ”Troll” F562

Throughout his life, Bauer frequently returned in his art to the childhood landscapes of Småland. The untouched Swedish wilderness, where trolls and other fairy-tale characters seem to emerge from the boulders, is brought to life through Bauer's treatment and appears as a mythical primordial force. During his years of study, he was fascinated by early German and Italian painting, but he soon returned to the Swedish fairy-tale forest.

After his marriage, his wife became the princess with the blonde hair, the centre of so many of his drawings, particularly in "Elves and Trolls," which he began publishing in 1907 and which earned him the status of our foremost storyteller. The entire Bauer family perished in the sinking of the steamer Per Brahe on Lake Vättern in 1918. John Bauer is represented in Sweden's major museums as well as in private collections in Germany and the USA. All of the works in the auction are taken from the book "Troll".
