Nordic Light

During the late 19th century, many Nordic artists turned their gaze toward the nature surrounding them. They ventured into the mountains and forests, to the coasts and marshlands, seeking to capture the light and atmosphere of the North. In this auction, artists meet who, in various ways, depicted the Nordic landscape and its light at the turn of the century. Their works bear witness to a longing for the original, untouched nature — unspoiled by the machinery of industrialization. They found inspiration in the shifting seasons, in the mist over still lakes, in the clear air of dawn, and in the lingering light of evening. With the rise of industrialism and modernity, there were also artists such as Gunnar Hallström and Anders Trulson who used the Nordic landscape to explore the darker sides of existence and the mysteries of the human condition.
