Provenance

The Capitol Cinema Palace was built in the Classicist style of the 1920s at its current address, 16 Mannerheimintie. Architect W. G. Palmqvist was responsible for the building’s design and its technical details.
According to the architectural drawings, architect Hilding Ekelund was commissioned to design the decorative elements of the auditorium, the adjoining halls, the foyer and other spaces, as well as their interior furnishings. The artists Toivo Vikstedt, Göran Hongell, Gunnar Forsström and Gunnar Finne also played a significant role in bringing the overall design to fruition.
The interior and exterior lighting, radiator covers, mirrors and metal furniture were manufactured by Oy Taito Ab.
The cinema was regarded as a total work of art, where architecture, furnishings and decorative details complemented one another to create a harmonious environment. When the Capitol Cinema Palace opened its doors in October 1926, it was the largest cinema in Finland, with a total of 938 seats, one-third of which were in the upper balcony.
Following the closure of the cinema in 200 the historic, partially protected and architecturally valuable premises were renovated and given a new look. The interior retains the historical architecture of the 1920s and the original ceiling paintings.
