During the 19th century, painting in the Western world underwent profound changes. The dramatic landscapes and history painting of Romanticism were followed by Realism’s interest in everyday life and contemporary society. During the second half of the century, the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists broke with academic ideals, exploring colour, light, and new ways of representing the visible world.
An important part of this development was plein-air painting. Landscape painters had long made studies outdoors, but during the 19th century it became increasingly common to complete entire paintings directly in front of the subject. Paint in tubes and lighter, portable equipment made working outdoors easier. Artists could now capture changing weather, atmosphere, and daylight more immediately. For the Impressionists, this approach became central.
