Max Goldstein was born in Berlin in 1925 but moved to Sweden in 1939, where he embarked on a long and succesful career as a costume designer. "Mago" was a stage artist with a large production, foremost of costumes for theatres, music halls and
motion pictures. He worked in Sweden as well as abroad. In total "Mago" designed costumes for about 125 stage productions. His first collaboration with Ingmar Bergman was with "Sawdust and Tinsel" in 1953 and the collaboration with Ingmar Bergman
continued with another twelve motion pictures and several stage productions. "Mago" was also responsible for the set design for three of Ingmar Bergman's stage productions. In the area of motion pictures he also designed the costume for his
personal friend Marlene Dietrich in "Just a Gigolo" in 1978.
