Rolf Schmitz’s Collection

Rolf Schmitz, who passed away this spring 91 years old, was during six decades a loyal visitor on auctions and at art dealer’s shops. The successful business man and entrepreneur Rolf, successively built a grandiose home at Strandvägen in Stockholm, which stretched all over the top floor. To step into the threshold in this magnificent floor with its solid interiors in the style of 18th century, is like moving into a Swedish manor house, tastefully decorated with classical antiques, porcelain and ceramics, along with the most extraordinary collections within Swedish art that ever been collected in modern time hanging on the walls. Rolf Schmitz, who was discrete and relatively unknown for most of the people outside the business, for him the collecting was a private pleasure which he never let go of and the last couple of acquisitions were made as late as in 2015. There are many friends and acquainted whom all can apprise the pride Rolf Schmitz felt about his collection in his home’s parlors.

Rolf always came to the viewings and auctions looking elegant and well-dressed with a hat and gloves. He asked questions and was curious, different art works were always discussed with joy. As the entrepreneur he was, Rolf was drawn to the cutting edge avant-gardist, which also was reflected in his collection. When he himself attended the auction biddings, he sat at the front row and as an auctionist you then knew he was a serious bidder and prepared to bid high on the chosen objects.

It was Rolf’s last wish that the entire home and its collection would go under the auction hammer. It is with a great pride that Bukowskis can present Rolf Schmitz’s Collection, a sale which subsume under the streak of magnificent collections and manor houses that Bukowskis has sold through-out the years, along with a catalogue which will become a valuable document in the future.
