More information

Charles Eames moved to California in 1941, after his marriage to Ray Kaiser, and began experimenting with molded plywood. This led to a contract with the U.S. Navy, when Eames in wartime designed various types of slats and leg stretchers of molded plywood. This led to experiments with also using plywood in furniture manufacturing. These attempts eventually led to the prototypes that were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946.
