1922 reser den unga konstnären Axel Olson från Halmstad till konstmetropolen Berlin för att studera hos den tyska skulptören och konstnären Alexander Archipenko. Här fann Axel Olson de kontinentala avantgarderörelserna; den franska kubismen, den ryska konstruktivismen och den italienska futurismen. Han besökte det avantgardistiska galleriet Der Sturm, där Gösta Adrian-Nilsson, Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald och Einar Jolin redan på 1910-talet haft utställningar. På Neue Staatsgallerie fick han starka intryck från konstverk av Cézanne, van Gogh, Gauguin Picasso, Léger, Schwitters och en rad tyska konstnärer som Marc och Leibl.
