Frie broke through during a period when much of Swedish art was moving towards idea-based expressions, but he remained committed to painting as an existential and sensory medium. In his works, we often encounter the open landscape, a motif that can evoke thoughts of the Nordic plein air painting tradition. However, for Frie, nature is never merely depicted. It is experienced, filtered through memory and emotion, and transformed through the intensity of colour. Since 2009, Peter Frie has also worked in bronze, thereby giving his depictions of nature a three-dimensional expression.
