Among the many tender portraits of small children that Strömholm encountered on his travels is the image of the two little boys who, with curious yet serious expressions, meet the photographer's gaze in the midst of play on a street in Paris. The image is typical of Strömholm's many child portraits, photographs imbued with a psychological depth that all bear the marks of a solitude and isolation perhaps rooted in Strömholm's own childhood. The boys are among Strömholm's most beloved subjects and have become iconic.
