Oluf Høst was born in 1884 in Svaneke and became one of Denmark's most renowned artists during the 20th century. His art is strongly associated with Bornholm, whose nature, landscapes, and everyday life were the main subjects of his paintings: the landscape around Gudhjem, the fishing life and herring smokehouses, Midsummer bonfires, and dramatic fires. After several years at art schools in Copenhagen, he moved back to the island in 1929 and settled in Gudhjem, where he lived and worked for much of his life.
