Peder Mönsted's (1859-1941) artistic talent was discovered early on, and he received his education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. There, he quickly gained recognition for his realistic landscape painting, which he continued to develop and refine throughout his career. Although the Danish vistas were dear to the artist's heart, Mönsted travelled around Europe, painting scenes of changing seasons and views in his characteristic style that synthesises realistic studio painting and plein air painting. Mönsted soon found a strong following among the upper class, and the Russian imperial family was among his clientele.
