In Ian McKeever’s paintings, light seems to emerge from within the image itself. Through thin, superimposed layers of paint, forms appear only to dissolve again. Darkness meets transparency, density meets emptiness.

Ian McKeever was born in Yorkshire in 1946 and studied English Literature before beginning his career as an artist in 1969. His early works often took landscape as their point of departure, combining photography, drawing and painting. During the 1980s, his work became increasingly abstract, reflecting a growing interest in the body, architecture and light.

Process is central to McKeever’s practice. Paint is applied in layers through which earlier stages remain visible, allowing each painting to carry traces of its own making. His often monumental works can be experienced as spaces rather than images, where forms emerge, disappear and return.

In the series Four Quartets (2001-2007), this exploration of light, rhythm and painterly presence is further developed. The title refers to T. S. Eliot’s poetic work of the same name, evoking ideas of time, repetition and stillness. The paintings unfold as variations within a coherent whole, with forms and layers of paint moving between dissolution and emergence.

For McKeever, painting offers a counterpoint to the speed of contemporary life. It demands time and concentration - a slower way of seeing. For more than five decades, he has returned to some of painting’s most fundamental questions: how a surface becomes a space, how matter can carry light, and how an image can convey something beyond words.
