In 1961–62, Nygårds worked as an assistant to the American photographer Bert Stern. One day in June 1962, they were in Los Angeles to photograph Marilyn Monroe on assignment for Vogue Magazine. The assignment involved a four-day photo session at the Bel Air Hotel. As Monroe was filming the motion picture Something’s Got to Give at the time, in which she portrayed a Swedish maid, she was interested in having Nygårds practise her pronunciation with her. Since the two got along well, Monroe made an exception and allowed him to take a nude photograph of her. She chose the setting and the moment; Nygårds captured it, and the image was spontaneous. According to Gary Cole, picture editor at Playboy, this is the last image of Monroe taken by a professional photographer.

According to Leif-Erik Nygårds, a maximum of 20 prints were actually produced from this edition of 150.
