In the series “36 Views of Mount Fuji”, Martin Wickström takes his starting point from one of the best-known series in art history, Katsushika Hokusai’s eponymous works. In Wickström’s paintings, the Japanese mountain has moved from 19th-century woodcuts into a contemporary visual world, where travel, photography and memory meet painting.

Fuji is the series’ fixed point. The mountain reappears, but never quite in the same way. It may lie far away, almost dissolved in the atmosphere, or emerge with the immediate clarity that has made its silhouette an image far beyond its geographical location. The world around it changes. Perspective, light and distance shift, and each painting becomes less a documentation of Fuji than a new attempt to approach the same subject.
