Gunnar von Gegerfelt utbildades på Konstfackskolan, Otte Skölds målarskola, Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen målarskola och vid Konstakademien i Stockholm.

Han målningar består av geometriska ytor ofta reducerade till plana ytor med spel mellan ljus och skuggor, och även mycket små valörförskjutningar. Han sökte färgens och formens renhet och klarhet. Han målade även abstraherade landskap, interiörer och figurkompositioner.

von Gegerfelt ställde ut flitigt i Sverige och utförde också ett stort antal offentliga verk. Bland hans offentliga arbeten märks inte minst målningen Vid Kebnekaise i Jägarskolans matsal i Kiruna och målningen Vägen och Berget i Tuolluovaara folkskolas bibliotek. Han skrev även flera uppmärksammade handböcker i keramik, teckning och målning. Hans geologiska intresse fick han nytta av i flera naturstensmosaiker i offentlig miljö.

Representerad på ett stort antal muséer och statliga verk, bland Länsmuséet i Gävle, Statens Konstråd, Museet i Hudiksvall, Stockholms Stadshus, Ljusdals kommun och Sveriges Riksdag. Han gjorde även flera litografiupplagor till Konstfrämjandet, Konstfrämjandet.
