More information

Frank Badur is a German artist who lives and works in Berlin and Finland. His practice primarily encompasses painting, drawing and printmaking, and is characterised by a minimalist and geometrically abstract visual language. Badur’s work can be understood in dialogue with international Constructivism, American Minimalism and Color Field painting, while also drawing inspiration from Asian philosophy and the significance of nature in Japanese and Finnish culture.

After studying art in Berlin between 1963 and 1969, Badur came into contact with the Swiss artist Richard Paul Lohse, whose ideas about a non-hierarchical pictorial structure had a major influence on his early work. A stay in the United States in 1982 marked another important turning point, as encounters with artists including Donald Judd, Richard Serra, Agnes Martin and Robert Ryman contributed to his departure from the strict symmetry of his earlier work and led him to develop a more intuitive approach to form and colour.

Key concepts in Badur’s art are proportion, harmony and time. Through reduced geometric forms and carefully balanced colour compositions, he creates works that combine analytical precision with a meditative and poetic quality. His art has been exhibited internationally at numerous museums and institutions, including in Berlin, Helsinki, Venice, Zurich and New York.
