Tage Hedqvist studied at Otte Sköld’s School of Painting in Stockholm and made his debut in 1932 together with Curt Clemens and Lennart Gram. He achieved his breakthrough during the Second World War with exhibitions at Svensk-franska konstgalleriet. Early on, he was influenced by modern French painting, as well as by the Stockholm archipelago, Arild and southern France. He created several remarkable concrete paintings, including the fine works in this auction, characterised by an unusual yet attractive horizontal format.

For several years in Stockholm, Tage Hedqvist designed sets for musicals at Oscarsteatern, working alongside, among others, Sven X:et Ericson and Stellan Mörner. His commissions included the set design for the Kar de Mumma revue at Södra Teatern.

Tage Hedqvist held solo exhibitions in Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen and Paris. He was also curator at Thielska Galleriet in Stockholm from 1961 to 1977, where he was praised for having “awakened this slumbering Sleeping Beauty castle”. He was a member of the Swedish Arts Grants Committee and chairman of the Swedish section of the Nordic Art Association.

His works are represented, among other places, at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Lunds konsthall, Helsingborgs museer and Nasjonalgalleriet in Oslo, Norway. In addition, he created a large number of public works throughout Sweden.
