More information

Carl Robert Brendel (c. 1821-1898), Dzierzoniow, Poland, founded the R. Brendel company in Wroclaw, Poland in 1866.
The company, with the help of the pharmacist Dr Carl Leopold Lohmeyer (1799-1873), produced botanical models of medicinal plants, made from a variety of materials such as wood, plaster, papier maché, varnish, etc.
The models were made to support the teaching of botany at a time when cameras and other equipment were not available. The plant models are large so that we can see how plants work and what distinguishes one group of plants from another.
R. Brendel was already known throughout the world at the time for these botanical models, which won prizes at exhibitions in Chicago (1893) Paris (1900) and St. Louis (1904).
