Provenance

The collection of Gustaf Waldemar Boijer (10 June 1864 in Tavastehus – 6 August 1944 in Sääksmäki), thence by descent within the family. G.W. Boijer was a Finnish deputy district judge and civil servant. He was also known as a passionate collector of objects of various kinds relating to the history of Finland.

Boijer held various posts at the Senate of Finland from 1892 onwards. During the tenure of Governor-General Bobrikov, Boijer leaked confidential information about Russification measures to newspapers in Sweden and other countries. He served as protocol secretary in the Senate’s Chamber Department from 1905 to 1918. He owned properties in Helsinki and also worked as a property agent. Boijer served on Helsinki’s assessment board and church council, and was a member of the Civil Guard.

Gustaf Waldemar Boijer’s interest in collecting began when, as a young man, he bought a sword from the era of Gustav III for three Finnish marks. He also collected old Tavastian proverbs for Tavastia Nation. Boijer believed that the runes of the Kalevala had originally been created and sung in Tavastia, but that they disappeared with the introduction of Christianity and were only rediscovered later by Elias Lönnrot in Karelia.
