Jani Leinonen, "For I was hungry" (detail)
Bukowskis’ Helsinki Today - Contemporary Art auction was closed successfully yesterday with marvellous results. The auction presented the very best of Finnish contemporary art and design and gathered a record number of both national and international bidders.
Bukowskis started their auction for Finnish contemporary art and design in 2016 and the auction is still today the only one of its kind in Finland. The secondary market for contemporary art has grown rapidly during the past years and the growth can bee seen on the Finnish art market as well.
The global trend is clearly starting to show on the Finnish art market. It was fantastic to follow how strong the demand was from the beginning of the auction all the way to the end. I believe that the strengthening of the secondary market for contemporary art will invigorate the primary market as well, says Laura Pohjola, specialist contemporary art.
The auction also presented many new names to the Finnish auction market, including Jani Leinonen, Reima Nevalainen, Helka Immonen, Tuula Anttonen, Emmi Kallio, Maria Jauhiainen and Anssi Törrrönen. Jani Leinonen’s ”For I was hungry” artwork was sold for an amazing final price of 19 204 €, Reima Nevalaisen "Cocoon" artwork reached a final price of 3 333 € and the final price for Helka Immonen's "Mirrors" was 2 718 €.
It feels amazing that debuting artists are recognized and that so many of the artworks reached fantastic final prices", say Laura Pohjola, specialist contemporary art.
The design segment also attracted eager buyers from all around the world. One of the auctions absolute highlights was Kristina Riska’s unique ceramic bowl that reached an amazing final price of 4 194 €. Sini Majuri’s glass objects were also extremely popular and her “Polar night” light sculpture was sold for a final price of 3 067 €.
It is exceptionally delightful to see new names rise in the top listings of the Finnish design segment. Majuri mixes modern technology with traditional glass blowing techniques. Optical illusions and hidden details are important elements in her works and sometimes the shadow can be more important than the object itself, says Anna Rosenius, specialist design.
