The specialist's choice – Modern Masters Helsinki

Bukowskis' specialists share their favourites from Modern Masters Helsinki!

We are delighted to present our leading auction for modern art and design. Finnish art and design are more sought-after than ever before and this auction presents the best of the best, carefully selected by our specialists for their quality and importance.

Which are your favourite works from Modern Masters Helsinki?

Timo Sarpaneva’s glass sculpture, Aqvaticus. It feels fantastic to be able to present the exceptionally high quality of Finnish design in this Modern Masters. Sarpaneva is known for his modern and functional glass works and the Aqvaticus sculpture represents his less common lightly coloured production, says Anna Rosenius, specialist for design.

Reidar Särestöniemi's artwork. I'm thrilled that the auction also includes an impressive work by the Mystic of Lapland, the almost shamanic Reidar Särestöniemi. The work is breath-taking, it has layers of colours and life and perhaps most importantly an almost dizzying effect on the viewer. Särestöniemi is popular both at home and internationella - his art is just that unique", says Johanna Lindfors, specialist for art.

Kain Tapper's artwork. Kain Tapper is one of the greatest names in Finnish modern art and he created the ”Childhood memory” –artwork during the last year of his life. Tapper’s strong material knowledge is clearly visible in the artwork – The rough material and the sensitive -and light colours work beautifully together, says Laura Pohjola, specialist for art.

Mirjam Salminen's jewellery. This auction includes a fantastic department for jewellery and the highlights include some unique pieces by Mirjam Salminen. Mirjam Salminen worked as a designer for Kaunis Koru in the 1950s. Her jewellery is modern with a Scandinavian style. Her jewellery is rarely for sale and these pieces are exquisite examples of her production", says Nina Westerlund, specialist for jewellery.

Why is Finnish design so popular?

I’m always reminding that we in Finland do not have a long history with valuable antique items, but that we on the other hand are pioneers when it comes to modern design. Finnish modern design has its roots in post-war poverty and was created by extremely innovative designers. Different shapes in the nature and short fleeting moments have inspired Finnish designers for almost 100 years. This unique combination of innovativeness and simplicity attracts international interest – Finnish design is organic, timeless and intriguing, says Johanna Lindfors, specialist for art.
