Auction for Fine Art and design exceeds all expectations – a record number of bidders online

Birger Kaipiainen, sculpture. Sold for 18 180 €.

Bukowskis’ online auctions for Fine Art and design exceeds all expectations through these turbulent times and delivers remarkable strong results for Helsinki Design + Contemporary Art. The online auction attracted a record number of bidders from over 25 countries and sold 102 % by value – which confirms that the art and design market is still stable and strong.

“The high final prices and the successful sell-through rate shows that the demand for quality art and design continues to be high even during these challenging times. Our design auctions have always attracted a lot of international bidders and this auction was definitely not an exception. The selection was exceptionally strong and presented many sought-after collector’s items which sparked a lot of interest both before and during the sale.” – Anna Rosenius, Bukowskis’ design specialist.

Notable design highlights were a ceramic sculpture by Birger Kaipiainen that sold for 18 180 € and a rare “Tooth” glass sculpture by Timo Sarpaneva, which doubled its estimate and sold for 16 782 €. The “Tooth” was the first work that Sarpaneva designed for Iittala in 1951. The lot, which was now sold at Bukowskis is the third known piece.

The contemporary art department, which was led by artists like Paul Osipow, Marika Mäkelä, and Peter Frie also achieved strong results. The top lot of the department was Osipow’s magnificent work, which realised 9 477 €.

Bukowskis is proud and grateful for the continued trust our customer has shown us and our ability to deliver throughout these challenging times. We remain confident that we will be able to share many more highlights this spring and continue to deliver the highest possible service and sales to our customers around the world.

We are now accepting consignments for our upcoming auctions and want to encourage our customers to take advantage of our digital services. Read more here >
