Marianne Richter Fläkten

Marianne Richter's large knotted pile carpet "Fläkten" was designed for AB Svenska Fläktfabriken in 1959. The factory was also called Fläkt, which has given the name to this carpet pattern.

Marianne Richter started in 1942 both as a teacher at Konstfackskolan (the School of Art) and at the same time she was associated with Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB. At MMF AB, Richter created her perhaps most famous work the 202 square meters large curtain designed for ECOSOC's council chamber in the UN skyscraper in New York.

Richter is known for her colourful creations and her very characteristic rugs and tapestries. She often used small geometric elements such as rhombuses, triangles, and squares as well as stylized flowers in a more extensive pictorial context. The colour palette is often playful, which you can see in this particular carpet "Fläkten" and in a rya "Guldslottet" which was designed the same year.

Marianne Richter has long been in the background in terms of popularity in comparison with Märta Måås-Fjetterström and Barbro Nilsson. Still, in the last ten to twenty years, interest in her work has increased significantly.
