Success for Bukowskis’ Helsinki Winter Sale

”Shipwrecked” by Ivan Constantinovich Aivazovsky sold for 673 965 EUR

– We are thrilled with the auction’s results. Helsinki Winter Sale presented an extensive selection of sought-after works by leading Finnish and international artists, and beautiful Works of Art. The auction attracted international interest and four paintings achieved prices above 100 000 EUR, says Saara Wörlund, Head of Finland.

The top lot of the evening was “The Shipwrecked” by Ivan Constantinovich Aivazovsky, which after intense bidding sold for a final price of 673 965 EUR, well above its estimate of 200 000 – 300 000 EUR. Aivazovsky is considered one of the greatest masters of marine art and “The Shipwrecked” is an excellent example of his unique talent to capture the ever changing nature of the sea.

“Aino” by Akseli Gallen-Kallela sold for a final price of 490 224 EUR, making it the third highest price realised for the artist at auction. Other highlight were Helene Schjerfbeck’s “"Student cap” (final price 214 614 EUR) and Karl Emanuel Jansson’s impressive work that reached a final price of 142 098 EUR. Paintings by Tove Jansson and Birger Carlstedt also attracted the buyers’ interest. “Berry Pickers” by Tove Jansson sold for a final price of 62 059 EUR and Carlstedt’s beautiful still live tripled its estimate and sold for 66 140 EUR.

– It is a real pleasure to note that Ivan Aivazovsky's marine paintings fascinate and delight across all borders. Akseli Gallen-Kallela proved once again that he is one of Finland's most appreciated classical artists and that his national romantic motifs have a very special place in the hearts of Finns, says Johan Wulff, Head of Art Finland.
