Works by Lars Tunbjörk from the Tom Böttiger Collection

Lars Tunbjörk

Lars Tunbjörk's breakthrough came in 1993 with the photo series and photo book "Landet utom sig" (The Country Beyond Itself). His sharp observations of a changing small-town life were highly appreciated, and his unique style was cemented in the project "I Love Borås!" The book was published in 2006 and contained pictures from Tunbjörk's hometown and many photographs taken during his travels from 1989 to 1996.

Tunbjörk's images are simultaneously melancholic, surreal, and sometimes slightly absurd. His way of noticing details and choosing compositions and subjects was unique. His gaze was particular because he could, with the help of the camera, reveal what was invisible to the rest of us: the image of ourselves and our society. The subjects always revolve around everyday life, the life happening here and now for us ordinary folk: shopping for cheap clothes in Ullared, a dirty slide in Borås, or a messy office in Tokyo. With his conceptual photography, Tunbjörk successfully combines documentation with humor. A similar approach can be found in the work of the British photographer Martin Parr.

"Tunbjörkare" became a term in the 1990s that influenced our perception and inspired filmmakers and photographers worldwide. To some extent, this was due to his unusual photographic technique; Tunbjörk used flash in daylight with a self-constructed tool that evenly spread the light across all parts of the image and countered the depth of field. The result is relentless; it shows winter-pale skin, the cable chaos under the desk, the vibrant colors of the shopping center, and the absurdity of amusement park decorations. From June 10th to October 15th, 2023, approximately 300 of Tunbjörk's photos will be exhibited at Fabriken Bästekille in Österlen. It is one of the largest exhibitions ever made with Lars Tunbjörk's work.

Lars Tunbjörk is represented in various institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, and Borås Konstmuseum.
