The spring Fine Art season concluded with 12 lots exceeding SEK 1 million, including works by Anders Zorn, August Strindberg, Helene Schjerfbeck, Carl Larsson and John Bauer. The live auction also featured outstanding examples of works of art, carpets, silver and jewellery, alongside an Asian department presenting several distinguished collections.
The art department demonstrated a continued very strong market for works by classical masters. The top result of the auction was Anders Zorn’s painting "Hämta vatten" ("The Water Pails"), (1907), which sold for a final price of SEK 15.5 million. This made it not only the most expensive sale of the auction, but also the highest-priced Swedish artwork sold at auction in Sweden this season.
Another highlight of the auction was August Strindberg’s "Enslingen" ("The Solitary One"), which achieved a final price of SEK 10.9 million. The work belongs to Strindberg’s notable output from the 1890s, a period when he returned to painting and developed an increasingly free and experimental style. With its expressive visual language and distinctive treatment of nature, “Enslingen” is considered one of the significant works that helped define Strindberg’s later artistic career.
Among the international artists featured was Joachim Beuckelaer, whose painting A fish market outside the city gate of Antwerp was offered at auction for the first time. The work attracted strong bidding and sold for a final price of just under SEK 7.4 million.
Other million-level results included works by Helene Schjerfbeck, John Bauer, Carl Larsson and Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski. The auction also achieved strong final prices for several works by Bruno Liljefors, Gustaf Fjaestad, Stefan Johansson and Pelle Swedlund.
