“Enslingen” by August Strindberg sold for SEK 10.9 million

At Thursday’s art auction at Bukowskis’ live Important Spring Sale, several works achieved million-crown results, among them August Strindberg’s painting “Enslingen” (1892), which sold for a final price of SEK 10.9 million.

The work belongs to Strindberg’s notable output from the 1890s, a period during which he resumed painting and developed an increasingly free and experimental style of expression. With its expressive visual language and distinctive treatment of the natural motif, “Enslingen” is regarded as one of the significant works that came to define Strindberg’s later artistic career.

The painting is closely associated with Dalarö, where Strindberg spent his summers in 1892 and 1893. It was here that he found renewed inspiration in nature and created several works that are now considered central to his artistic production. “Enslingen” is therefore not only an important artwork but also an expression of the creative renewal that characterised Strindberg’s time in Dalarö.

Executed in oil on paper mounted on board, the work had an estimate of SEK 4–6 million and was ultimately hammered down at a final price of SEK 10.9 million.
