Bukowskis’ online auction, Helsinki Design Sale, presented a carefully curated selection of world-class modern design by prominent Finnish and international designers such as Paavo Tynell, Alvar Aalto and Alexander Calder.
Among the highlights of the auction were jewellery pieces by the American artist Alexander Calder, with provenance from Aino Aalto and her family. During the 1930s, Calder’s jewellery became something of a phenomenon within avant-garde and international modernist circles, worn not only by Aino Aalto but also by figures such as the gallerist Peggy Guggenheim, the writer and feminist Simone de Beauvoir, and the artist Georgia O’Keeffe. The highest bid was achieved for a brooch in silver and steel wire, to a final price of 58 900 EUR.
The auction also featured a number of highly sought-after lamps by Paavo Tynell. Highlights included a brass ceiling light with glass shades and leaf decoration, a ceiling light with slatted shades, an elegant floor lamp with a perforated shade, and several pairs of brass wall lights, all of which sold for more than double their estimates, with a top final price of 39 470 EUR.
Within ceramics, decorative plates and dishes signed by Birger Kaipiainen attracted considerable bidding. The highest final price in this category was achieved for a larger dish with an iridescent glaze, decorated with flowers and ceramic beads, which sold for 23 850 EUR.
Other design highlights included ceiling lights by Lisa Johansson-Pape and Carlo Scarpa, a veneer dish by Tapio Wirkkala, as well as several pieces of furniture and floor lamps by Alvar Aalto.
