A late Gustavian mahogany table by G. Iwersson (master in Stockholm 1778-1813), signed and dated 1794.
The table offered in this sale is an excellent example of Gottlieb Iwersson’s first-rate late Gustavian mahogany furniture craftsmanship which, in the words of Torsten Sylvén, “is of exquisite quality, with harmoniously composed exteriors and decorative detailing”. Of particular note is the elegantly swept stretcher centred by an urn. This feature has long been regarded as a characteristic hallmark of Gottlieb Iwersson, and tables with similar stretchers and urn motifs have been attributed to him.
This attribution has been based on a table, almost identical to the present example, unsigned but passed down through the Iwersson family. With the present table — the first known signed work incorporating this feature — any doubts regarding authorship are dispelled, making it an important and significant piece within Gottlieb Iwersson’s oeuvre.
