International Masters at Bukowskis

Highlights from Modern Art & Design

International masters and iconic design were in the spotlight when Bukowskis hammered modern art and design at its latest live auction. Highlights from the auction included a painting by Fernando Botero, and a table by Charlotte Perriand.

International masters

The Art Department presented an impressive lineup of international works this season, featuring renowned names such as Botero, Vasarely, Matisse, Chagall, and others. One of the auction’s top lots was El cuarto de baño, a 1983 painting by Colombian “post-abstract realist” Fernando Botero, portraying a voluminous woman in front of a bathtub. Previously exhibited at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the painting was sold for an impressive final price of 8 125 000 SEK.

Several lots within the Art Department achieved final prices above one million SEK, including works by Victor Vasarely, Henry Moore, and Lotte Laserstein. Scandinavian artists such as Olle Olsson-Hagalund, Erik Olsson, Isaac Grünewald, Elsa Thoresen, and Tove Jansson also exceeded expectations, with final prices well above their estimates.

Iconic Design

One of the major highlights from the Design Department was a table by the French designer Charlotte Perriand, created around 1956 by André Chetaille for Galerie Steph Simon in Paris. The iconic piece sold for a final price of 1 437 500 SEK, marking the highest auction result ever achieved in Sweden for an international design object.

Other top results included a pewter top tray table by Anna Petrus, a pair of “Väddö” easy chairs by Axel Einar Hjorth, a set of chairs by Finn Juhl, glass by Paolo Venini, porcelain by Wilhelm Kåge, lamps by Carl-Axel Acking and carpets by Märta Måås-Fjetterström.
