SUMO, SPORT, RITUAL AND ART
Göran Flyxe started his collection in 1971 when he lived in Tokyo. It has been exhibited at a number of museums such as Haifa Museum, Israel 1997, Swedish East Asian Museum 1992 and 2016. The collection comprises more than 80 woodblock prints with scenes out of the Japanese national Sport Sumo. The collection offers great insight into sumo-wrestling and Japanese culture, it depicts moments of ritual, sport, competition as well as the wrestlers leisure time.

Japanese Sumo Wrestling is one of the oldest martial arts in Japan, many of the wrestlers came from the Samurai class. Sumo wrestlers were a favorite subject on Japanese woodblock prints. Sumo has its roots in the Shinto religion. The matches were dedicated to the gods in prayers for a good harvest. The oldest written records of the sport date back to the 8th century.

Viewing 6-10 September at Berzelii Park 1 in Stockholm. Wednesday-Friday 11-17, Saturday-Sunday 11-15.
