The specialist's choice – Marcus Kinge lists art favourites

Specialists choice Marcus Kinge

We have spoken with Marcus Kinge, Specialist Prints, who talks about the selection at this spring's Modern Art + Design. He also takes the opportunity to list some of his favourite objects among the substantial amount of prints at this season's auction.

Why should one buy prints at this spring's Modern Art + Design auction?

– Prints have historically been a vital art form with a broad collector base. It is an excellent opportunity to acquire high-quality works by international artists without the price tag becoming too high. One can obtain very affordable pieces by artists whose other works are expensive. It is a sophisticated art craft encompassing a variety of techniques and expressions, where the artist can work closely with a printer who leaves their own mark on the process. A tip is always to reach out to us and request a condition report before bidding, which we are happy to assist with, as the condition can significantly impact the value of graphic art.

Andy Warhol, "Mick Jagger”

Warhol's fascination with fame and celebrities shines through not only in his art but also in his lifestyle. Andy Warhol spent much time with Mick Jagger and his then-wife, Bianca. Their relationship, documented in Warhol's biographies and articles, garnered significant media attention and symbolized, in many ways, the mythic jet-set icons of the 1970s. When Jagger engaged Warhol to design the Rolling Stones' legendary album Sticky Fingers in 1971, Warhol had total artistic freedom. Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol continued their creative collaboration. Four years later, in 1975, Warhol released a portfolio of 10 silkscreens based on personal photos that Warhol had taken of his friend. The images featuring Mick Jagger remain one of Warhol's most famous silkscreen series of renowned celebrities.

Henri Matisse ”La nageuse dans l'aquarium” from "Jazz"

In addition to Henri Matisse's groundbreaking paintings and sculptures, he created several impressive illustrated books. One such work is "Jazz," published in 1947, which contained 20 colourful and remarkable compositions. With this work, he transitioned from painting to working with paper cut-outs, where his cutting in different colours brought him newfound creativity. These were then executed in pochoir, as in the auction editions, a high-quality stencil technique. Although the subjects, despite the title, are not directly connected to the world of music, they radiate clear tones and rhythm, embodying a sense of free and vital energy. As a music lover myself, I never tire of them.

Pablo Picasso, ”Fumeur à la Cigarette Blanche”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's passing, yet his influence and presence in art history are stronger than ever. Especially as a printmaker, he stands out as an incomparable creative force. Throughout his life, he produced graphic works, ranging from etchings and lithographs to linocuts. He created his first print in 1899 as a teenager and his last in 1972, at the age of 90, just a year before his death. Therefore, presenting a pervasive collection of Picasso's prints at this spring's auction is particularly exciting, featuring 14 different catalogue numbers that encompass a wide stylistic and monetary range. There is something for everyone.
