Bukowskis’ highly anticipated catalogue for Modern Art + Design is here, featuring works by internationally renowned artists such as Serge Poliakoff, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Lucio Fontana, as well as groundbreaking works by Swedish artists Erik Olson and Gösta Adrian-Nilsson. Bukowskis’ design department also offers interesting collections and internationally sought-after items from some of the 20th century's foremost and most sought-after designers, including Josef Frank, Axel Einar Hjorth, Otto Schulz, and Carl Bergsten. In other departments, we find sought-after textiles by Märta Måås-Fjätterström, rare sculptures by Hans Hedberg, and designer jewellery by Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe.

The auction's top work is "Snälltåg/Schnellzug" by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson, GAN, an early groundbreaking work dated 1915. He called himself a ”cubofuturist”, and the painting expresses the spirit of the time with a motif of a rushing express train at full speed. The work, purchased directly from the artist in 1917 and then owned by the same family through inheritance, has never been offered for sale before. Other Swedish highlights to mention include the constructivist composition ”Jonglören (The Juggler)” by Erik Olson (1928), which is part of a collection with provenance from the Dillberg family, who were close friends with several members of the Halmstad group.

Among the main works in the international department is ”Composition taches rouge et jaune” by Serge Poliakoff, executed in 1954, which is characterized by geometric-linear form and colour relationships with provenance from the well-known Myran Eknayan collections. Serge Poliakoff was trained in Paris and London and is one of the foremost representatives of the development of abstract painting in the period after World War II. Other highlights in the catalogue include ”Buste de Femme le bras droit leve”, a signed ink-on-paper by Henri Matisse, and an exciting selection of graphic works such as ”Fumeur à la Cigarette Blanche” and ”Picador” by Pablo Picasso and ”Serie Noire et rouge” by Joan Miró, to name a few.

After several seasons of creating new world records for Josef Frank’s unique cabinets, we are proud to present another rarity from Firma Svenskt Tenn, ordered by Countess Elsa von Rosen. The cabinet is upholstered with a chintz fabric reminiscent of the glamorous interiors of the 1930s and 40s. The colourful is also characteristic of Firma Svenskt Tenn, Estrid Ericson, and Josef Frank and the interiors we have associated with them since the 1930s.

The catalogue also includes unique furniture from Nordiska Kompaniet designed by Carl Bergsten, executed and exhibited at the anniversary exhibition in Gothenburg in 1923. This exhibition is often described as a kind of dress rehearsal for the World Exhibition in Paris in 1925 and offered innovative design from designers such as Carl Bergsten, Carl Hörvik, and Axel Einar Hjorth. There are relatively few images documenting the exhibition, which means that much of the exhibition furniture that was included has never been shown to a wider audience.

Otto Schulz, who also has a connection to Gothenburg, is represented in a dedicated section with several objects, including a decorative cabinet in green velvet with geometric decoration of nailheads, purchased at the Boet firm in Gothenburg in the 1920s. Otto Schulz has recently been recognized for his contributions to both Swedish Grace and Swedish Modern and as a result has become increasingly sought after on the auction market.

Among the NK furniture auction, there is also a selection of sought-after sport cabin furniture from the 1930s designed by chief architect Axel Einar Hjorth. Bukowskis design department also offers internationally sought-after lamps from some of the foremost designers of the 1900s, including a large collection of early production lamps by Hans-Agne Jakobsson, as well as a collection of lamps and armchairs by Carl-Axel Acking. Another interesting collection is the Rolf Walter Collection - a significant collection of Swedish and international modernist design.

In the carpet section, there is a strong focus on Swedish textiles with several highlights by Märta Måås Fjetterström, including "Örtagården" and "Almarna". "Rubirosa Grön" by Marianne Richter, "Nejlikan Gul" by Barbro Nilsson, and a gigantic carpet by Agda Österberg are all additional fine examples of a Swedish craft heritage that has become increasingly sought after both in Sweden and internationally in recent years. The spring auction also offers designer jewellery by Wiwen Nilsson, Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe, and Kristian Nilsson, among others, as well as sought-after ceramics by Carl-Harry Stålhane, Berndt Friberg, and Axel Salto, as well as several unusual sculptures by Hans Hedberg in the form of oversized fruits.
