Million-level sales and records at Contemporary Art & Design
This week, Bukowskis inaugurated the autumn live auction season with Contemporary Art & Design – the largest contemporary live auction in the Nordics. In line with developments on the global auction market, Bukowskis reports a strengthened performance compared with the spring season. Highlights from the two auction days include seven lots exceeding one million SEK, and new records for Mats Theselius and Ulla Wiggen.
The Swedish section demonstrated remarkable success for female artists, with multiple lots surpassing one million SEK, including works by Lena Cronqvist, Cecilia Edefalk, and Gunnel Wåhlstrand. Ulla Wiggen also stood out with ”Universalinstrument” selling for a final price of 933 200 SEK, which set a new auction record.
Among the international highlights of the auction, we saw million-level sales for Alex Katz, Arthur Boyd, and Andy Warhol, as well as high final prices for photographs by Nan Goldin, Terry O’Neill, and Francesca Woodman.
The design department offered an exciting mix of Swedish and international designers, featuring highlights from design icons such as Ettore Sottsass, Donald Judd, and Mario Bellini. Among the Swedish design pieces, strong results were noted for several armchairs by Mats Theselius, including “El Dorado”, “Rex”, and “Hommage à Sigurd Lewerentz”. Theselius’ “Älgskinnsfåtölj” exceeded expectations and sold for a final price of 364 000 SEK – setting a new world record for the designer.
