Andres Serranos bilder skar som en kniv igenom det konservativa USA i slutet av 1980-talet. Men Serranos bilder är mycket mer än provokation. Hans djupa medvetenhet, kunskap och engagemang i konsthistoriens kanon och katolicismens intresse för smärta och förlåtelse gjorde honom snabbt till en respekterad konstnär bland kännare. I denna bild har han, likt Yves Klein, approprierat en västerländsk ikon, Nike från Samothrake, och låtit henne omges av livets vätskor.
