I maj 1921 författar GAN sin sedemera omdebatterade programskrift ”Den gudomliga geometrien”. Jan Torsten Ahlstrand skriver i ”GAN Perioden 1914-1932”, utgiven av Mellby Konstgård, att skriften hade karaktären av ett personligt dokument, en polemisk stridsskrift riktad mot konstkritikerna. Samtidigt försvarar och exemplifierar GAN, i skriften, motsättningarna inom sitt konstnärliga utövande. GAN illustrerar sina teser med ett strikt formschema i svart och vitt där han i fem teckningar visar hur han bygger upp ett sammanhang av plana geometriska former. GANs inre behov av ett figurativt innehåll var dock så starkt att han aldrig övergick till ett rent plangeometriskt måleri.
Målningen ”Hafen II” som utfördes i slutet av 1921 är konstruerad kring det geometriska formschemat med tydliga figurativa och nonfigurativa element som relaterar till hamnlivet. Auktionens målning ”Midsommar” är utförd under GANs sommarvistelse i Sverige 1923. Målningen är på samma sätt som ”Hafen II” uppbyggd kring rektanglar längs diagonala linjer. Vi finner hamnbyggnader, röda stugor, skepp, vågor och symboler infogade i det geometriska mönstret.
More about Gösta Adrian-Nilsson
Gösta Adrian-Nilsson is most notable as a visual artist, and he is a pioneer of Swedish modernism. He studied at the Tekniske Selskabs Skole in Copenhagen and later for Johan Rohde at Zahrtmann’s school in Copenhagen. As an avant-gardist, Nilsson was constantly searching for new influences. In Berlin, he was influenced by the circle around the radical magazine Der Sturm, through Kandinsky and och Franz Marc. In Paris through Fernand Legér and the artists in his circle. GAN was an eclectic in the positive sense of the word. He took the the artist styles of the 1900s and created new impressions. Symbolism, cubism, futurism, expressionism, constructivim and Theosophy were the colours occupying his internal pallet. He had a sharp eye for the masculine and his painting was often energized by the vitality of modern technology, vibrant eroticism, and echoes of tyrants. No other Swedish modern artist exhibits such a unique style.
