A Japanese gilt and lacquered wooden figure of Buddha and a travel shrine, Edo Period, 19th century.

Standing on top of a lotus pedestal situated on an ornate platform, dressed in a flowing robe with hair, framed by a flaming mandorla. The shrine of slender rectangular form, the exterior covered in black lacquer, inside two hinged doors. Height of figure with mandorla 38,5 cm. Height of shrine 39 cm.

Wear, dry cracks. Hand with minor loss of decoration-

Provenance

Given as a gift from Sven Hedin to John Tuneld, the first librarian at Lunds University, and his wife Anna 'Kicki' Tuneld, who had given the figure to Olof Ask, a doctor in Lund, thence by descent.
