Contemporary Art & Design

Bukowskis presents an auction at a high international level with a number of powerful art and design objects from the 1980s. Art and design objects from the 1980s have increased in value in recent years and are more sought after than ever. The auction offers works by famous artists such as Andy Warhol, John Chamberlain, Jean-Michel Basquiat and David Hockney, as well as works from important Swedish artists such as Ola Billgren and Jonas Bohlin.

The American 1980s are, for example, reflected in the glossy surfaces of John Chamberlain's 1987 metal sculpture ,”Le First". It is a prime example of Chamberlain's approach to material and creation, where intuition and spontaneity are key words. Another artwork presented from that period is Jim Dine's big mixing technique with double heart motifs, dating from 1981.
“John Chamberlain is today regarded as one of the most important post-war artists ever. He revolutionised sculpture as a genre and his importance to the younger generation’s artists can hardly be overstated. Chamberlain's metal sculptures are intuitive and expressionist objects that, despite their weight, possess movement and a high degree of elegance, "says Karin Aringer, Specialist in Photography & Contemporary Art.

The auction shows several interesting graphic works of art by the most sought after artists. Andy Warhol is represented with several iconic motifs. The auction also includes three motifs by Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of the most influential artists of the 1980s, who also brought graffiti and fine art together. Another iconic artist featured in Contemporary Art & Design is David Hockney, with a total of ten different works displaying his breadth.

“The exciting thing about Hockney's graphics is how he has used traditional techniques in an elegant and seemingly unobstructed way in combination with, what would have been for him typical motifs from everyday life in the 1970s and 80s. His popularity has increased since his large retrospective exhibition was shown at Tate Britain in London two years ago,” says Cecilia Berggren, Specialist Graphics.
This autumn's auction also includes several fine paintings by the Swedish artist, Ola Billgren. The works allow us to follow the gradual introduction of the colour red, which towards the end of career came to be his signature colour.

The design department contains several iconic objects from the 1980s and offers a selection of the most sought after objects of recent years. For the design world, the 1980s meant great progress and change, with the Memphis Group in Milan and Jonas Bohlin in Stockholm showing examples of how new design norms and ideas were established. In the auction, they are represented by Sottsas unusual ceiling fixture, "Quisiana”, and Bohlin's well-known concrete chair, "Concrete". In the late 1980s, the advocate of simplicity, Jasper Morrison, contributed to backlash symbolic of how the 1990s aesthetic of minimalism developed. This new aesthetic is evident in the dining set "Ply Chair / open back" designed by Morrisson for Vitra, which are also included in the auction.
