Ursprunget till GANs fascination för idrottsmän och atleter går tillbaka till tiden i Berlin 1913-14 och därefter. I katalogen till GAN-utställningen på Mjellby konstmuseum i Halmstad 2002 skriver Jan Torsten Ahlstrand: ”Efter hemkomsten till Lund i augusti 1914 hyrde GAN ett rum vid Idrottsgatan på Väster, nära Idrottsplatsen, där han kunde göra studier av muskulösa unga män i rörelse. Han inspirerades till några futuristiskt betonade målningar av idrottsmän, en höjdhoppare, en kulstötare och några fotbollsspelare […] GAN tilltalades särskilt av hårda och kampfyllda sporter som fotboll, boxning och rugby och såg i dem en symbol för kampen om tillvaron. Bland hans litterära favoriter fanns Jack London, vars socialdarwinistiskt och nietzscheanskt färgade romankonst hade gjort ett starkt intryck på honom.”
GANs intresse för idrotten var flerbottnat. Idrotten var för hundra år sedan ett nytt och vitalistiskt samhällsfenomen, som blev en del av det framväxande moderna samhället. GAN med sitt alerta inresse för det som låg i tiden blev en av de första konstnärerna i Europa att måla idrottsmän i modernistisk stil. Men idrotten blev för GAN mer än en modernitetssymbol: studierna och målningarna av atletiska idrottsmän röjer också ett förtäckt homoerotiskt intresse. Den fria idrotten och de flesta andra sporter vid denna tid var alltjämt en rent maskulin angelägenhet och GAN hade en stark dragning till atletiska unga män.

Gösta Adrian-Nilsson is most notable as a visual artist, and he is a pioneer of Swedish modernism. He studied at the Tekniske Selskabs Skole in Copenhagen and later for Johan Rohde at Zahrtmann’s school in Copenhagen. As an avant-gardist, Nilsson was constantly searching for new influences. In Berlin, he was influenced by the circle around the radical magazine Der Sturm, through Kandinsky and och Franz Marc. In Paris through Fernand Legér and the artists in his circle. GAN was an eclectic in the positive sense of the word. He took the the artist styles of the 1900s and created new impressions. Symbolism, cubism, futurism, expressionism, constructivim and Theosophy were the colours occupying his internal pallet. He had a sharp eye for the masculine and his painting was often energized by the vitality of modern technology, vibrant eroticism, and echoes of tyrants. No other Swedish modern artist exhibits such a unique style.
