More information

Sérgio de Camargo föddes i Rio de Janeiro och studerade vid Academia Altamira i Buenos Airus för Emilo Petturuti och Lucio Fontana. Vidare studerade han filosofi vid Sorbonne i Paris och kom där i kontakt med Brancusi, Laurens, Arp och Vantongerloo.

I Sérgio de Camargo tidiga skulpturer ser man tydliga spår från både Picasso och Laurens. Han återvände till Brasilien 1950 och kom då i kontakt med den brasilianska konstruktivismen. Ett par år senare var han dock tillbaka i Paris igen, för att sedan resa vidare till Kina. Mellan 1961 och 1974 var de Camargo bosatt i Paris där han 1963 blev medlem i Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV). Under denna period arbetade han med monokroma vita träeliefer med parallella cylindriska former, där ljus möter skugga, ordning möter kaos och massa möter rymd.

1963 belönades de Camargo med det Internationella skulpturpriset vid Paris Biennalen. Under slutet av 1960-talet ställde de Camargo ut på många internationella utställningar och erhöll guldmedalj 1965 på Sao Paolo Biennalen, 1966 på Venedig Biennalen och 1968 på Documenta i Kassel.
