Literature

Ottomeyer / Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich 1986, part I, page 140, no 2.11.8, example of a model of Louis XV applique designed by Nicolas Pineau, Paris, circa 1740 (see attached pictures).
Reinier Baarsen, Decorative Ats in the Rijksmuseum, Paris 1650-1900, 2013, page 122, print by Juste-Aurèle Meissonniers, published circa 1748, shows an ideal rococo interior where a pair of Louis XV applique flank a large wall mirror to reflect the light from the wax candles as much as possible.

More information

The lot shows the French Rococo sense of form for the organic vegetative overall effect for the entire interior, which included furniture, mirrors, wall panels and appliqués.
