Bram Bogart, holländare från början men sedan 1969 belgisk medborgare, bodde ett tiotal år i Paris 1951-1960. Här lärde han känna både Antoni Tàpies och Alberto Burri, vars "matter paintings" utförda med material som sand, betong, tyg och tyg gjorde starkt intryck på honom. Bogart såg också utställningar med Pollock, Rothko, Kline och Newman som inspirerade honom till den abstrakta expressionismen och den informella konsten som dominerade efterkrigstidens konstscen.
Efter flytten till Belgien 1960 gick Bogarts konst från föreställande till slutligen helt abstrakta verk med färgen tjockt och pastost målad på underlaget i djupa, rena färger. Han experimenterade ständigt med att utforska själva materien och strukturen i färgen genom olika sätt att applicera den på underlaget eller snarare skulptera färgen i en tredimensionell form.
