Louis Cane tillhör den generation av konstnärer som gjorde sig ett namn i början av 1970-talet med den franska konstnärssammanslutningen Supports/Surfaces. Ett kollektiv av konstnärer vars skapande kretsade kring dekonstruktion av konsten. Demontering och avmystifiering av målningen som objekt, både fysiskt och filosofiskt. Gruppen fokuserade på ytan på duken (= Surface) och ramverket (= Support).

När gruppen upphörde började Louis Cane, från 1975, att utföra halvabstrakta målningar baserade på traditionella verk av Cezanne, Giotto med flera. Färgsättning blev viktig. År 1978 gjorde han en serie verk betitlede "Arches" som det aktuella katalognumret tillhör.
