Under klara vinterdagar brukade Einar Jolin ta promenader vid Djurgårdsbrunnsviken och iaktta livet på isen. Viken, som ligger vackert till mellan Skansen och Rosendals slott, har länge varit en uppskattad plats för stockholmare, en lugn fristad nära stadens puls.

Jolin hämtade ofta inspiration härifrån till sina målningar. I hans konst återkommer vintervyer med skridskoåkare, isseglare och nyfikna änder, motiv som följde honom genom stora delar av hans konstnärskap.
