John Zurier (b. 1956 in Santa Monica, California) is an American artist known for his abstract paintings, which explore colour, light and surface. At first glance, his works may appear monochromatic, but closer observation reveals subtle shifts in colour, nuanced tones and traces of brushwork. Inspired by changes in nature and the distinctive light of the Icelandic landscape, Zurier creates paintings that evoke a strong sense of atmosphere and presence. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and works between Berkeley and Reykjavík. His work has been exhibited at institutions including Moderna Museet Malmö and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 2010, he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.
